Check out our selection of cult films featuring pools!
The summer, a pool… a partnership that works so well that a few films have given them starring roles! It’s always a nice touch to slip in a reference to a film involving a pool when trying to win over a hesitant customer. So, which cult movies have our editorial team selected for you? Here is an overview.
1/ La Piscine (released as “The Sinners” in the UK), directed by Jacques Deray (1969)
Gather a dream cast of actors at their peak (Alain Delon, Romy Schneider, Jane Birkin, etc.), add a measure of Saint-Tropez, a mixture of a love story and drama, and you obtain La Piscine, the classic by French director Jacques Deray. In this film, the pool is clearly the focal point of the plot… even though the event that happens mid-way through the film (a murder…) is not necessarily a good selling point! You should maybe focus on the beautiful shots in the film and the dolce vita that Jean-Paul (Alain Delon) and Marianne (Romy Schneider) seem to be enjoying at the beginning …
2/ A Bigger Splash, directed by Luca Guadagnino (2016)
A Bigger Splash is a remake of La Piscine, brought up to date for the occasion. As a result, a few adjustments have been made to the plot: the setting is no longer Saint-Tropez, but the island of Pantelleria, west of Sicily. Marianne is a rock star who has lost her voice, and Paul (not Jean-Paul) is a famous photographer. However, the disruptive element remains the arrival of Harry and his daughter, Penelope…
3/ Swimming Pool, directed by François Ozon (2003)
Another cult movie that takes place around a pool! Charlotte Rampling plays Sarah Morton, a successful British crime novelist, who borrows her publisher’s house in Provence, in the south of France, to rest and work. Ludivine Sagnier plays Julie, Sarah’s publisher’s French daughter, who shows up unexpectedly and seems to have no other objective than to make her life a misery… An exhilarating, funny and intriguing film!
4/ Welcome, directed by Philippe Lioret (2009)
The “heartwarmer” of our top four films on pools. Praised by the public and critics alike, Welcome follows the adventures of Simon (Vincent Lindon, who plays the role perfectly), a swimming coach in Calais, who decides to try to impress and hopefully win back his wife by secretly helping a young Kurdish immigrant to fulfil his dream: becoming a strong enough swimmer to swim across the English Channel to be reunited with his girlfriend, Mîna, and become a professional footballer with his favourite team, Manchester United.
