3rd prize: Terme di Merano Hotel

It was the stunning views from this Italian project by Hofer Group Srl architects which conquered the hearts of the jury. On the roof of the Terme di Merano hotel, the pool overlooks the surrounding mountains and the town of Merano and guests are amazed by what they see through the windows!

Respecting the harmony between the pool, the terrace and the landscape was a major factor in the design. This is why the pavement of this amazing pool is inspired by the local rock and the deck terrace is a reminder of the Alpine forests.

Built on the roof of an existing hotel, the pool had to meet a strict deadline, achieved by pre-fabricating the component parts and rapid assembly. The architects met this challenge by using modern technologies, making it possible for the hotel to provide clients with spellbinding breaks in record time!

2nd prize: Stone in reflection

Nestled in the middle of the garden of a holiday village in Peratallada, one of Spain’s most beautiful medieval cities, this pool by MESURA architects highlights the charms of cut stone.

The design respects the history of the site and uses local materials. Thus, the existing pool was conserved, becoming the showpiece of this installation with an infinity overflow. A century-old acacia was also integrated into the terrace.

On three levels, the terrace was paved with white travertine marble from Turkey recycled from an ancient project nearby. A real challenge for the pool architects, as they had to re-cut the flagstones to the right dimensions to fit the shape of the pool!

1st prize: Portopiccolo SPA

Created by Apostoli Studio architects, this splendid indoor and outdoor pool in the spa of the ecovillage of Sistiana (Italy) won the Pool Design Awards 2018 first prize in its category!

Built on the bases of an existing pool, this atypical 300sq.m. design required a very intelligent approach. The indoor and outdoor spaces feature bubble benches, hydro massage cabins, swan neck jets and Nordic baths and are lit with LEDs.

In addition to its idyllic location and attractive design, this amazing pool is also distinguished by its technical innovations:

  • Its automated filtration system needs no human intervention.
  • Its heating system is divided into several sectors to maintain the pool at a constant temperature both indoors and out.
